Results confirm the justification for investing in the recycling yard – citizens of Sarajevo increasingly use proper waste disposal options
An analysis of waste disposal data at the Paromlinska in Sarajevo recycling yard in 2024 shows that citizens are increasingly utilizing the opportunity to properly dispose of special waste categories. This has significantly reduced the amount of waste that would otherwise end up in containers as mixed municipal waste.
146% Increase in Total Waste Volume
In 2023, a total of 126 tons of waste was disposed of at the recycling yard, whereas in 2024, this amount surged to 310 tons, marking an impressive 146% increase. These figures indicate a growing environmental awareness among citizens and an improvement in the recycling system in Sarajevo Canton.
Waste Analysis by Type:
A detailed breakdown reveals significant growth across all three main waste categories:
Packaging Waste (Paper, Plastic, Glass)
2023: 8.2 t → 2024: 12.8 t (+56%)
Electrical and Electronic Waste
2023: 4.9 t → 2024: 7.5 t (+54%)
Other Waste (Bulky Waste, Construction Waste, Bio-Waste, Metal Waste, Tires, Wood)
2023: 108 t → 2024: 291 t (+188%)
Why are these figures important?
The increase in the amount of waste sent for recycling demonstrates greater citizen engagement in the waste management system, as well as the efficiency of the recycling yard, which provides free disposal of non-hazardous waste. This contributes to reducing improper waste disposal near containers and enhances Sarajevo's overall environmental landscape.
We continue to improve infrastructure and services to make proper waste disposal easier for citizens and further raise awareness of the importance of recycling. Together, we are building a cleaner and sustainable city!
