"Green Dots" soon in Canton of Sarajevo - underground eco islands for separate collection and recycling of packaging waste
Canton of Sarajevo, 01.12.2015. - At the Cantonal Government building in Sarajevo today was held the ceremonial signing of the contract for the pilot project "Development of primary selection of packaging waste from municipal solid waste in the Canton of Sarajevo." The project will be implemented in the cooperation of the Ministry of local public utilities and infrastructure of the Sarajevo Canton, PUC "Rad" Sarajevo and the first packaging recovery organisation Ekopak, at the initiative of the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Elmedin Konakovic, Minister of local public utilities and infrastructure Senad Hasanspahic and member of the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton Elvedin Okeric.
In the first phase of the project is planned to build and set up 5 underground eco-islands, ie. sets of 4 underground containers for paper, plastic, glass and general waste, which will allow citizens to separately dispose packaging waste. Today's contract is defined that Ekopak will finance the procurement of these containers and PUC "Rad" Sarajevo will be in charge for installation and regular emptying, while all three partners will work together on promoting the project and raising awareness of the importance of separate collection and recycling of packaging waste. That means the introduction of a new approaches to waste management, that are in all EU countries and the region developed in the last 20 years.
In the next phases is also planned that Canton establishes 50 eco-islands and procurement of the two special vehicles for emptying containers.
Signing was attended by the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Elmedin Konakovic, Minister of local public utilities and infrastructure of the Canton Sarajevo Senad Hasanspahic, Manager of PUC "Rad" Selim Babic, and Manager of Ekopak Amela Hrbat.
"By this we resolve several problems, the first primary is adequate waste disposal in the city center, the second is that the bags with disposed waste are gathering a large number of stray dogs and the third is planning and taking care of this very important area of life," said Prime Minister Konakovic and expressed his expectation that in the future will be many such containers for selective waste disposal, or "Green Dots" as they are symbolically called.
"In this agreement is planned the procurement of 20 underground containers for the establishment of 5 eco-islands in the Municipalities of "Novi Grad" and Center, which include 5 yellow containers for plastic, metal and multilayer materials, 5 blue containers for paper, 5 green containers for glass and 5 black containers for mixed municipal waste ", the Minister Hasanspahic explained after signing the contract and also announced that all the other municipalities from the Canton Sarajevo will be included.
" PUC "Rad" will finance the construction works to decorate locations, and provide regular servicing of containers, while Ekopak will allocate 50.000 BAM for purchasing of the underground containers", said the Manager Babic.
"After joining 14 municipalities of the Federation in the Geen Dot System, where Ekopak is successfully developing a transparent, long-term and efficient system for recovery and recycling of packaging waste, in accordance with the best European experiences, it is a pleasure and success that these activities are moving to Sarajevo Canton. Therefore we would like to thank Prime Minister Konakovic, the Minister Hasanspahic and member of the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton, Mr.Okeric, who primarily recognized the importance of the development of the segment of environmental protection and within that the waste management. They tend to persist the Canton Sarajevo as a contemporary environment, which is pleasant to live, and we are glad that they recognized the partner in Ekopak that will successfully implement these activities", said Manager of Ekopak Amela Hrbat.
